Gifu Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum
The renowned and decisive Battle of Sekigahara took place on this very site in the year 1600. This experienced-based facility makes use of all the latest technology to give you a firsthand experience of this historical event.
You can also visit the surrounding historical sites to get a wider and deeper understanding of the Battle of Sekigahara.
Shimadzu Yoshihiro’s Encampment
The Shimazu troops are famous for the story of how they broke through enemy lines and escaped the battlefield. Although they were a small unit of only about 800 men, they made skillful use of firearms; they did not dig trenches or build fences within their camp, and instead the firearms took turns sniping, shooting down the cavalry and supporting the Western Army from the center.
Mt.Sasao/Site of Ishida Mitsunari’s Encampment
On the eve of the decisive battle, Ishida Mitsunari left Ogaki Castle and set up his headquarters on Mount Sasao, which overlooks Sekigahara. Currently, at the foot of the mountain, where the horse-proof fence has been restored, is the site of Shima Sakon's camp, and from the observation deck, which is about a five-minute walk up, you can see the same view that Mitsunari saw.
Site of the decisive battle
The Battle of Sekigahara saw the Eastern Army gain the upper hand due to Kobayakawa's defection, while the Western Army was on the brink of defeat. This is the site of the decisive battle where the Eastern Army troops fought fiercely, claiming to be the one taking Mitsunari's head. Today, a large stone monument stands tall, and the battle flags of Ieyasu and Mitsunari flutter in the wind.
Tokugawa Ieyasu’s Final Encampment
Ieyasu, who had moved his camp from Mt. Momobari, ordered his troops to fire on Kobayakawa Hideaki on Mt. Matsuo. Kobayakawa's troops brilliantly outwitted the Western Army and led the Eastern Army to victory. After the battle, an audience was held at this Shogiba, and the heads of the enemies that the generals had captured were inspected.
Sekigahara Station Tourist Exchange Center
The Sekigahara Ekimae Tourist Exchange Center (nicknamed "Let's go! Sekigahara") is a popular tourist information hub and antenna shop for Sekigahara Town. Its location in front of the station makes it a great base for the start and end of your trip.
